School’s out, summer is upon us, but Gibbs athletics is still on my mind. I know, don’t I ever get tired of it?!?! Well, not really. I enjoy the student-athletes, coaches and parents. I enjoy the games, I enjoy watching the practices. I just really enjoy Gibbs sports. After a few weeks away from the end of spring sports, I will take this opportunity to look back and review the 2008-2009 Gibbs sports year.
I will take the time to list and make some comments about the 2008-2009 season. Please forgive me if I leave anyone or anything out. Shoot me an email and let me know. I like to keep up with it all.
Team Success – As a former player I had the opportunity to be on a few good teams while at Gibbs and I realize what it takes to make teams tick. This past season Gibbs have a number of teams reap team success on the fields and courts.

2009 Region 2 Wrestling Champions
2009 Wrestling - The 2009 Gibbs wrestling team made an impact on Knox Area wrestling. The 2009 team won the Region 2 championship, lead by Coach Tim Pittman, who was named Prep Xtra Coach of the year. Kyle Stuff was named to the All Prep Xtra 1st team after capturing the Region 2 championship and finishing third at the state competition. Logan Young, and Lucas Farmer both earned 2nd team All Prep Xtra honors for 2009 season as well.
2009 Lady Eagles Basketball – The 2009 season was one that fans of Lady Eagle basketball had been waiting on for a number of season. With a roster that included Morgan Burnette, Jaimie Cabage, Brittany Cavalaris, Blakely Brewton, Brooke Martin, and Taylor Mills, the Lady Eagles made a great run to the TSSAA Substate round that fell just short against Elizabethton. The Lady Eagles also were state ranked for 3 weeks during the season. This teams success was built on previous seasons in which the Lady Eagles took their lumps but continued to grow as players and a team. No Lady Eagle team had reach the Substate round in close to 10 seasons. Lady Eagle Taylor Mills earned all-state honors
2009 Lady Eagles Softball – The 2009 softball season ended just as most softball seasons do, at the TSSAA state tournament. Although the Lady Eagles did not bring home a state championship, they did win the District 3-AA regular season and tournament titles, plus the Region 2-AA and State Sectional titles. Sadie Tibbs was named District MVP and Brooke Mitchell was named District tournament MVP. Coach Mitchell won her 500th game against Karns.
2009 Eagle Baseball – Gibbs baseball continued it string of success under Coach Davis. The Eagles finished 2nd during the regular season to Seymour but defeated Seymour to win the District 3-AA Tournament. The Eagles defeated CAK in the first round of the region but placed 2nd to Catholic in Region 2-AA. The Eagles then lost a heart breaker in the state sectional to Pigeon Forge.
2009 Other Sports – The Lady Eagle tennis team had a doubles region winner, Jacob Price qualified for the state track meet, several Lady Eagles made the All-District soccer team. Gibbs football qualified for the playoffs for the 3rd straight season.
As I stated before, please forgive me if I have forgotten names or events, but let me know. I love to keep up to date on all things Gibbs.
